🦎 By The Axolotl Guide

What is a Wild Type axolotl?

The original natural coloration found in Lake Xochimilco. Brown to olive body with dark speckles, dark eyes. Considered hardier than designer morphs by many keepers.

Morph-specific care

Most genetically robust. The natural camouflage makes spotting parasites or fungal issues slightly harder, watch closely.

Typical price

Expect $25 to $60 from a reputable breeder. Pet store prices are often double for the same animal with worse genetics. See the buying guide for what to look for.

Is this morph right for you?

  • Rarity: common. Available from most breeders nationwide.
  • First axolotl? Yes, ideal first morph.
  • Care difficulty: The same as any axolotl. Water temperature, filtration, and food rules don't change by morph.

Read the complete beginner setup guide before ordering any axolotl. Tank cycling takes four to six weeks and must happen before your axolotl arrives.
