Don't Feed
These cause real harm or kill axolotls.
Live Feeder Fish
AvoidFeeder goldfish and minnows carry parasites and bacterial pathogens. They also contain thiaminase, which destroys vitamin B1 over time. Plus, they bite axolotl gills.
Crickets
AvoidCrickets are for terrestrial amphibians. Axolotl digestive system can't process chitin. They float, which axolotls won't reach.
Mealworms
AvoidMealworm exoskeleton causes impaction. Their hard head capsule can scrape or pierce axolotl throat tissue.
Vegetables
AvoidAxolotls have no digestive enzymes for cellulose or plant proteins. Vegetables pass through whole and can cause impaction.
Chicken
AvoidEven unseasoned chicken is wrong: too much fat, no calcium, possible bacterial contamination from raw meat.
Salmon
AvoidSalmon (and many freshwater fish) contain thiaminase that destroys vitamin B1 in axolotls. Chronic exposure causes neurological damage.
Aquarium Plants
AvoidCarnivores don't graze. But during a feeding strike, axolotls sometimes swallow leaves that get in the way. Most pass safely, some cause impaction.
Caution
Safe in specific ways. Read first.
Bloodworms
CautionBloodworms are mosquito larvae, not actually worms. Tasty for axolotls but iron-heavy. Long-term staple feeding can cause organ stress.
Brine / Mysis Shrimp
CautionFrozen, sterilized brine shrimp are safe as treats. Live brine shrimp from pet stores can carry hydra and parasites into your tank.
Beef Heart
CautionBeef heart is high protein but mammalian fat composition is wrong for axolotls. Long-term feeding causes fatty liver disease.
Tubifex Worms
CautionTubifex live in mud, often in polluted water. Live tubifex from pet stores carry pathogens. Freeze-dried form is sterile.
Safe Staples & Treats
The proven foods that keep axolotls thriving.
Earthworms
SafeEuropean nightcrawlers and Canadian nightcrawlers are nutritionally complete for axolotls. High protein, soft body, easy to digest.
Blackworms (Live)
SafeCalifornia blackworms (lumbriculus variegatus) are aquatic worms with complete nutrition. Stimulating because they wriggle. The closest thing to a 'training treat' for axolotls.
Sinking Pellets
SafePellets designed for axolotls or large amphibians (like Hikari sinking pellets) are nutritionally balanced and don't require refrigeration. Boring but reliable.
Daphnia
SafeDaphnia are aquatic crustaceans that are nutritious and easy for small axolotls to swallow. Frozen daphnia is widely available.
