Can axolotls
live with that?

Axolotls strike at anything that moves nearby that might be food, including other axolotls. The species is naturally solitary in the wild and tolerates conspecifics only briefly during breeding.

Goldfish look like good cold-water tankmates because they tolerate cooler water than tropical fish. But they're aggressive feeders, eat axolotl gills, and need temperatures slightly above the axolotl comfort zone.

Bettas are tropical fish that come from warm Southeast Asian waters. They cannot survive long-term below 72F. Axolotls cannot survive long-term above 72F. There's no temperature that works for both.

Almost all aquarium shrimp species are small enough that axolotls will eat them. Ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp — all are food, not tankmates.

Guppies are tropical fish that don't tolerate cold water. Axolotls eat them as live food. The combination guarantees rapid death for at least one species.

Plecos are tropical catfish that scrape algae off surfaces. In axolotl tanks, they scrape the axolotl's slime coat off the skin, causing serious damage. They also need warm water.

Catfish is a broad category covering tropical scavengers, large predators, and warm-water bottom feeders. Almost none coexist safely with axolotls.

Tropical frogs (most aquarium-kept species) need warm water. Even cold-tolerant frogs are predators that eat small axolotls or compete for food. Axolotls eat smaller frogs.

Aquatic turtles are predatory and view axolotls as prey. Even smaller turtle species can amputate axolotl limbs. Turtles also need very different tank conditions.
