Can Axolotls Live With Frogs?

Frogs and axolotls have wildly different temperature needs, eat the same food, and can predate each other.

🦎 By The Axolotl Guide

The Short Answer

Frogs and axolotls have wildly different temperature needs, eat the same food, and can predate each other.

Why This Works Badly

Tropical frogs (most aquarium-kept species) need warm water. Even cold-tolerant frogs are predators that eat small axolotls or compete for food. Axolotls eat smaller frogs.

Temperature Compatibility

Most aquarium frogs need 72-78F. Axolotls need 60-68F.

How Frogs Injures Axolotls

Aggressive frog species (African dwarf frogs, fire-bellied toads) bite at axolotl gills and toes. Toxic frog species (fire-bellied) excrete skin toxins harmful to axolotls.

How Axolotls Injure Frogs

Adult axolotls eat dwarf frogs and tadpoles. Larger frogs can injure axolotl while being attacked.

The One Exception

None recommended for cohabitation. Even species with overlapping temperature ranges have other incompatibilities.

Symptoms to Watch For

What to Do Instead

Frogs require a different setup entirely. Get a separate tank.
