Can Axolotls Live With Shrimp?

Axolotls eat shrimp. Even ghost shrimp meant as tank cleaners get eaten within days.

🦎 By The Axolotl Guide

The Short Answer

Axolotls eat shrimp. Even ghost shrimp meant as tank cleaners get eaten within days.

Why This Works Badly

Almost all aquarium shrimp species are small enough that axolotls will eat them. Ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp — all are food, not tankmates.

Temperature Compatibility

Most shrimp tolerate 65-75F. The temperature range overlaps with axolotls but temperature isn't the problem.

How Shrimp Injures Axolotls

Larger shrimp species (ghost shrimp, Amano) can pinch axolotl gills with their claws. Rare but documented.

How Axolotls Injure Shrimp

Adult axolotls eat shrimp in one gulp. Even shrimp larger than the axolotl's mouth get attacked and injured.

The One Exception

Some keepers add ghost shrimp temporarily as cleanup crew, knowing they'll be eaten within 48-72 hours. This is feeding strategy, not cohabitation.

Symptoms to Watch For

What to Do Instead

If you want a planted ecosystem, skip shrimp. Axolotl tanks work fine with snails or bare-bottom design.
