Why tank footprint matters more than gallons
Axolotls are benthic — they live on the bottom of their tank. They walk along the substrate, hide under decor, and explore the floor. They don't swim up and down through the water column like fish.
This means tank length × width (the floor footprint) matters far more than total gallons. A 20-gallon long tank (30" × 12" × 12") has way more usable floor space than a 20-gallon tall tank (24" × 12" × 16") even though they hold the same water volume.
The hierarchy of tank shape preference for axolotls:
- Long and shallow — best for axolotls. 20-long, 40-breeder, 75-gallon are all good shapes.
- Standard length, medium height — acceptable. 29-gallon and 55-gallon work but height is wasted.
- Tall and narrow — bad for axolotls. 20-tall and 25-tall don't give enough floor area.
Minimum tank size per axolotl
One adult axolotl needs 20 gallons long minimum. This is the consensus across major care guides, veterinary references, and axolotl Reddit. The 20-gallon long footprint (30 × 12 inches) is enough for an adult axolotl to walk, hide, and feed without feeling cramped.
Below 20 gallons, water parameters fluctuate too rapidly. Ammonia from waste accumulates faster. Temperature swings are more extreme. Beneficial bacteria can't establish stable colonies. The axolotl is constantly stressed by parameter changes it can sense.
Recommended adult tank size
For most pet axolotl keepers, 40-gallon breeder is the right call. Reasons:
- 36-inch length and 18-inch width is double the floor area of a 20-long
- Twice the water volume means stable parameters week to week
- Room for substrate, hides, live plants, and decor
- Easier weekly maintenance (20% water change is just 8 gallons)
- Adult axolotl never outgrows it
- Only $60-$80 more than a 20-long, but you'll use it for 15 years
The "I wish I bought this from day one" tank size for most keepers is the 40-gallon breeder.
Do axolotls need more space as they grow?
A juvenile axolotl under 5 inches can live in a 10-gallon temporarily. By the time it reaches 6-7 inches, the 10-gallon is cramped. By adulthood (8-12 inches), you need 20 gallons long minimum. Many keepers plan a single upgrade from juvenile (10g) to adult (40g breeder).
