Why not buy a pre-made aquarium kit?
Pet stores sell "all-in-one" aquarium kits for $80-$150. Skip them. They're designed for tropical fish and include the wrong gear for axolotls:
- Tank size too small — most kits are 5-10 gallons, half what axolotls need
- Wrong filter type — HOB filters with strong flow stress axolotls
- Gravel substrate — fatal impaction risk for axolotls
- Tropical-fish heater included — useless for axolotls (they need cooling, not heating)
- No water test kit — the single most important tool isn't included
- Cheap LED lights — too bright for axolotls
Building your own kit from individual components costs the same or less and gets you the right gear from day one.
Three starter kit tiers
Tier 1: Bare minimum ($228) — what's listed above
The absolute essentials. Works fine for one axolotl in a 20-gallon long tank. This is what most new keepers should buy.
Tier 2: Recommended mid-range ($350-$450)
Upgrades to a 40-gallon breeder tank, adds a HOB filter with pre-filter sponge, fine aquarium sand substrate, summer cooling fan, and a few extra hides/plants. The "I wish I bought this from day one" setup.
Build it by starting with Tier 1 and swapping the tank, adding fine sand, adding an aquarium fan, and adding 2 more hides + silk plants.
Tier 3: Premium ($700-$900)
Adds an aquarium chiller (essential for hot climates), upgraded substrate, live plants, larger filter, and dedicated storage for test kits and food. Total kit cost can hit $900.
What's NOT in a good starter kit
Avoid these often-included items:
- Gravel — causes fatal impaction in axolotls
- Tropical fish food — wrong nutrition profile
- Heater (over 50W) — too hot for axolotls
- Plastic plants with sharp edges — can damage slime coat
- Tank decorations with cracks or holes — axolotls get stuck
- Powerful canister filters — flow too strong without modification
- Live tropical fish as tankmates — bite axolotl gills
