Melanoid axolotl
common $30–$80

Melanoid

Solid black or dark grey, no iridescence

🦎 By The Axolotl Guide

What is a Melanoid axolotl?

Pure black or charcoal grey with no shiny iridophores. Eyes are also dark. Very striking against a light tank background.

Morph-specific care

Lighter substrates show them off best. Avoid bright lighting which can stress them more than other morphs.

Typical price

Expect $30 to $80 from a reputable breeder. Pet store prices are often double for the same animal with worse genetics. See the buying guide for what to look for.

Is this morph right for you?

  • Rarity: common. Available from most breeders nationwide.
  • First axolotl? Yes, ideal first morph.
  • Care difficulty: The same as any axolotl. Water temperature, filtration, and food rules don't change by morph.

Read the complete beginner setup guide before ordering any axolotl. Tank cycling takes four to six weeks and must happen before your axolotl arrives.
